Maurice Carlin, Miners Strike Posters

Maurice Carlin makes work that explores the stories of individuals and organisations from the recent past through the material they leave behind. This includes a banner made from a found archive of documents from the 1980’s Theatre Writers Union and the site of some 26 years old posters from the miners strike era transformed into a temporary place of pilgrimage.

In 2007, he co-founded Islington Mill Art Academy, a free self organised art school. The Academy exists to experiment with what an education in art can be, where it can take place and how it can be paid for. It is open to anyone who would like to be an artist and who is interested in taking responsibility for the way in which they intend to do this. Since its inception the group has undertaken residencies in the Lake District, Berlin and Glasgow, written for Frieze and Art Monthly and worked with galleries such as Transmission, Glasgow, The Arnolfini, Bristol and the ICA in London.
