Pattern is all around us. In man-made ways this could be in dress fabrics or in floor tiling. In nature this occurs in the repeating forms of leaves or the spots of a cheetah.

In a letter to Matisse, the critic Jacob Tugendhold posed the question ‘Where does pattern end and subject matter begin?

For viewers of the art what is most interesting? - the pattern; the subject matter - or the place where they interfere? In her paintings and prints Alex Dewart, explores this theme taking cues from animation, Japanese woodblock prints and a wide variety of textile prints and tile patterns.

Alex Dewart took an MA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins, London and is based at Marlow, Bucks.
